haute hats

May 4, 2012

As a child, Susan Morehead loved wearing hats. She still does.

But Morehead never thought about making hats until she discovered millinery classes at American Intercontinental University in Atlanta.

In 2010, Morehead designed her first winter/fall collection. Last year, she officially started Suzseams.

Morehead works with fur felt (a favorite), wool felts and various straws, such as sisal straw, which is versatile and lightweight.

Some upcycled fabrics, such as silk, are often added to her creations, which are fashioned on hat blocks built by her photographer husband.

Morehead believes every woman looks beautiful in the right hat.

Her “toy” or doll” hats are fun styles, she said, for weddings and other special events.

But her collection includes enough fresh styles for every season and occasion (Derby Day?).

Hats range from $50 to $180 for hats that take six to nine hours to make.

The hat (pictured above) is $125.
