Bow ties & beaus

March 27, 2012

Judy Hill never intended to start a business when she made three bow ties as a gift for her son at the University of Virginia medical school.

Before long, that gift led to the creation of Charlotte-based High Cotton Ties.

Operated by Hill and her three sons, the North Carolina company makes washable, 100 percent cotton bow ties ($45) and the new, four-way bow ties ($55).

The madras and reversible bow ties are popular. But the madras/seersucker combinations are best sellers, especially during bow-tie season of Easter, The Derby and June weddings.

For preppy guys who love color and like to stand out in a crowd, the bright colors in the “Yellow Spinnaker” collection have been a recent hit.

For weddings, the two-year-old company also offers its popular cummerbund sets for $110.

Check or various men’s shops across the Southeast, including Atlanta-area H. Stockton stores.
