objects of desire

March 2, 2012

Doug and Susan Williams started their Mississippi-based home accessories business 25 years ago after a vacation to Jamaica.

Kalalou started with unique artisan baskets. And the company grew from there.

A Creole word, Kalalou is a kind of soup that is never made the same way twice — much like the couple’s ever-expanding line of vintage-inspired, artisanal pottery, vases, lanterns, tableware and wall decor.

The couple, who met at the University of Southern Mississippi, live in Jackson.

For the next two-plus days, you can buy some of Kalalou’s accessories at a discount at

For example, the rustic candelabra (below) is 31 inches high. The sale price is $89 (versus $195). The hanging metal lantern with a charming bird accent  is $19 (regularly $40).  Two driftwood vases with glass inserts are $35 (versus $110.)
