take the cake

February 29, 2012

Several years ago, Kathryn Bowden left her job as marketing director for a luxury car maker and launched a second career – and her own company: Unforgettable Gourmet Pound Cakes.

Bowden first sold cakes in 2008 at an art show. Then she landed a spot at Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market.

For her yummy, almost-too-pretty-to-eat cakes, Bowden uses a 100-year-old recipe handed down by her husband’s grandmother.

The best-selling cake is the original almond. But butterscotch is a close second.

The cakes are a big hit at the holidays and at Mother’s Day. During the summer, the wrapped-and-ribbon-tied cakes head to beach, mountain and lake homes as hostess gifts.

The large cakes, in various shapes, are $20 (plus $12 for shipping). Minicakes range from $16 to $20.

For a happy ending to your upcoming dinner or holiday party, buy cakes at or at Atlanta-area Whole Foods.
